The ZGRAF JV/XP New Age Archive

INTRODUCTION

The ZGRAF JV/XP New Age archive contains a Sysex-format collection of approximately 50 (mostly original) patches for Roland JV/XP-compatible synthesizers and workstations.

The offerings are predominantly in the New Age genre.

The patches were designed and tested on a Roland XP-30 synthesizer. Waveforms from the Orchestral I and Session expansion boards may be needed for proper playback on some of the patches.

DISCLAIMER

These patches are intended primarily for demonstration purposes. There is no guarantee that the sounds will mix well with other instruments.  In some cases, patches utilize heavy effects processing and consume heavy polyphonic resources. The format used may make it difficult to combine material with other sources.

USAGE / LIMITATIONS

These patches are free and are being placed into the public domain.  This sysex archive may be disbursed freely, provided it is delivered in its complete form, with documentation.  No financial profit is to be gained from its distribution.

INSTRUCTIONS

The sysex archive provided was created using a JV-1080 compatible, complete USR patch-bank dump.   The user may use any Sysex-compatible dump utility to send the data to his/her musical instrument.

As an example, using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.0, the user can: (1) Select “Sysx” from the “View” menu to open the “Sysx” data view, (2) Load the archive file in Sysx binary format, and (3) Use the “Send Bank” instruction to transmit the MIDI data to the synth.

PATCH LIST

Patch

Name

Description

1

BreathyFlut1

A breathy flute-type sound.

2

BreathyFlut2

A second breathy flute-type patch, with a more emphasized bottom end.

3

HarpStrings1

A patch consisting of a combination of harp and strings.

4

HarpStrings2

Another harp and strings patch, with a stronger bottom end.

5

HarpStrings3

A third harp and strings variation, with a phasing effect thrown in. The phasing enlarges the apparent stereo image.

6

LtrFromPat+

A variation of Roland’s splendid stock “LtrFromPat” patch.  Added a bit more volume (the original was very low-level) and a few tweaks.  NOTE: Think I read somewhere that the stock “LtrFromPatch” patch has bugs, and could drop polyphony in some circumstances.  By nature of its origin, this patch could exhibit similar problems.

7

LtrFromPat+2

Another variation of “LtrFromPat”, with some added  “air” and “ambience”.

8

LtrFromPat+3

A third variation of “LtrFromPat”.   Like “LtrFromPat+2”, but with some filtering tweaks.

9

Poly Rock+

A variation of the Roland stock “Poly Rock” patch.

10

DesertCrystlWide1

A variation of Roland’s wonderful “Desert Crystal” nylon guitar patch.  Added lots of ambience and reverb, and some vocal “air”.

11

DesertCrystlWide2

Similar to  “DesertCrystlWide1”, but with an emphasized bass end.

12

IceAndOohs1

Dripping ice sounds and choir oohs – kind of a pad effect.

13

BellsAndOohs

Another pad effect, with bells and choir oohs.

14

Delicate EP+

A punchy remake of Roland’s stock “Delicate EP” patch (the original was a bit wimpy for my tastes!)

15

BellStrings1

Bells and strings.  Big sound, wide stereo.

16

BassWaves1

A synth bass patch with lots of oomph and ambience, too.

17

BassWaves2

Similar to “BassWaves1”, but with a phasing effect added.

18

GuitarBreath

A nylon guitar patch enhanced with vox, air, and a new-age feel.

19

MachoPiano

Heavy-duty piano.  This one packs in a bit more bass sound than most piano selections.

20

ViolinOrch1

An violin/orchestral patch with a bit more volume than the Roland stock patches.

21

ChambrWoods+

A variation of Roland’s stock “ChamberWoods” patch, with more presence, volume.

22

WindDance1

A windy patch with lots of air, ambience, reverb.

23

WindDance2

Similar to “WindDance1”, with organ added for an even larger sound.

24

PanFluteDance1

A pan-flute patch, enhanced with some bass effects.

25

PanFluteDance2

Another pan-flute patch.

26

BigStrings1

A “big strings” patch.  Good for orchestral arrangements.

27

BigStrings2

Another “big strings” patch, with a wider stereo image.

28

ElectroHarp1

An electric-harp type patch.  Reminds me of Andreas V.

29

ElectroHarp2

Another variation of the electric-harp.  The tones seem to “float” in the air in this patch.

30

ElectroHarp3

A third electric-harp patch, with strong bass end and heavy reverb.

31

DancingVibes

Vibes that dance (or pan back and forth across the stereo field).

32

AngelBreath

A choir/vox patch, with a big stereo field.

33

HarpsiString1

A combination of harpsichord and strings.

34

HarpsiString2

Another combo of harpsichord and strings, with a somewhat different stereo image.

35

VoxFanfare

A patch consisting of a series of delayed vox sounds.  The delays are timed to produce an interesting fanfare effect.  NOTE: Got the “fanfare” idea from the “Cathedral Orch” patch that appears on an extra Roland JV/XP bank (downloadable on the www.lilchips.com site). This patch is one of my favorites.

36

VibeFanfare

A similar fanfare effect, this time using vibes and a bottle sound.

37

AirOrchFanfare

A fanfare effect with pan-flute, bottle, and horn.

38

TrumpetFanfare

A fanfare effect using different trumpet sounds.

39

Str+ChoirBig

Strings and choir.  Heavy reverb for a big sound.

40

OrgChoirBig

Organ and choir.  Huge sound.  Suitable for praising God in a big way.

41

PwrGuitStage

(OK, this probably isn’t a new age patch, but I couldn’t resist)  Electric guitar distortion and reverb on a big stage, with some vox thrown in for good measure.

42

WaveGarden

An airy, breathy pad effect.

43

BellSynth

Bells and organ/synth.

44

SitarStrings

A sitar enhanced with strings and some ambience.

45

MarimbaString

A marimba sound with lots of strings and air. I like the delicate touch the marimba adds here.

46

MarimbaString2

The marimba strings sound, with the phasing effect thrown in.

47

MarimbaString3

More marimba, with phasing and a bigger stereo image for a wide sound.

48

GlockChoir

A glockenspiel enhanced with some choir vocals.  Not sure how useful this patch is for compositions, but what the heck…

49

GuitarAngel1

Nylon guitar and angel choir voices, with wide ambience.

50

GuitarAngel2

Similar to “GuitarAngel1”, with the phasing added.

CONTACT INFORMATION / REQUEST FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

ZGRAF hopes you like the material.  If you have any questions or ideas for improving the sounds -- or if you have requests for additional patches, please feel free to write.

ZGRAF would like to continue to develop sounds for JV/XP users, and for newer Roland modules (such as the magnificent Roland XV-5080), but as you might imagine, it takes time to develop and tweak patches.

If you could donate $10-$15 toward our cause, your contribution would be very much appreciated.  Further, you will be added to our mailing list, so that if/when new sound libraries are released, you will be promptly notified.

Peace!
